OUR STORY

The beginnings (1999 – 2002)

Initially founded as ’Umwelt-Management-Partner (UMP) GmbH’, Systain met the growing demand for consulting services on the topic of sustainability aimed at OTTO GmbH & Co. KG, parent company to Systain. Especially in sustainability fields relevant to OTTO GmbH & Co. KG, Systain built up consulting expertise. The most substantial project was carried out for the Foreign Trade Association of the German Retail Trade (AVE) in 2001. The AVE sector model for social responsibility later served as a nucleus for the development of the BSCI.

The textile years (2003 – 2009)

Various challenges facing the textile industry also shaped the development of Systain. Long before GOTS, standards for organic cotton and a whole chain-of-custody system were set up for the Otto Group. The topic of organic cotton was already targeted at an early stage. For instance, Systain has been supporting the Aid by Trade Foundation (AbTF) in the development of the ’Cotton made in Africa’ standard (CmiA) since 2005. Besides environmental issues, the management of social aspects in international supply chains became business priority for Systain. Audits of working conditions and supplier qualification training weres carried out and became focus of Systain business activities, mainly in the textile industry – however, other non-food products started to become more relevant as well (furniture, ceramics, construction markets).

Becoming a comprehensive CSR consultancy (2010 – 2015)

After one decade of intensive consultancy activities, Systain reinvented itself in 2010 and 2011. Core of this development was a strong orientation towards a fact-based sustainability management. New methods and models were developed in order to anchor the strategically relevant topic of sustainability in the business strategies of our clients. Our efforts were rewarded by the Hamburg Consulting Award in 2013 and the CSR Award of the Federal Government of Germany in 2014. Furthermore, we could strengthen our expert position in assessment, auditing and supplier training. Today, we advise our clients in a fully comprehensive manner – from the development of a CSR strategy to the implementation of individual CSR activities in global and local supply chains, in emerging and developing countries.

ETHICAL BUSINESS

Sustainability is an essential part of our business philosophy. As a sustainability consultancy, we aim to act socially and environmentally responsible throughought all business processes. We take a stand for fair partnerships with our service providers and excellent working conditions for our employees. We try to shape the environmental impact of our business in a sustainable manner whenever possible. For business meetings, we prefer traveling by train and avoiding flights.

Systain even goes one step further: The practical implementation of many consulting projects takes place in so-called developing and transition countries. These countries are struggling with enormous social and environmental challenges that are reflected in our daily work. We want to initiate positive change, beyond the scope of our consulting projects. Our shareholder has agreed to Systain being run as an ethical business. Systain remains a profit-oriented company, but will use profits for social and environmental initiatives. The projects chosen by us will be related to our consulting services and core competencies. Thanks to our long-term expertise in CSR and sustainability we can identify social and environmental problems and contribute to their solution. Moreover, we see ourselves as multipliers: we encourage our clients to support our chosen social and environmental initiatives beyond their CSR activities.

In addition to our ethical-business activities, Systain donates a whole day of work annually with its people to actively work in environmental or social projects.
