Our story
The beginning (1999 – 2002)
Systain is building up consulting expertise in the sustainability fields of its parent company OTTO GmbH & Co. KG. One of the key projects is the development of the AVE Sector Model for social responsibility in the supply chain, the later nucleus for the development of the BSCI (the world’s leading supply chain management system for social compliance).
The textile years (2003 – 2009)
During these years Systain has developed trend-setting solutions in the field of environmental and social management in the supply chain, especially in the textile industry. Even long before the establishment of GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standards), organic cotton standards are developed for the Otto Group and a complete chain of custody is established. Systain also supports the Aid by Trade Foundation in the development of the standard „Cotton made in Africa„.
Further development into comprehensive CR consultancy (since 2010)
Since 2010 Systain is moving towards a fact-based sustainability management. New methods and models are developed to embed sustainability as a strategically relevant topic in corporate strategies. Thanks to its intensive development work, Systain was awarded the Hamburg Consulting Prize in 2013, played a major role in winning the Otto Group’s CSR Prize of the German Federal Government in 2014 and received the More-than-a-Market Award in China in 2016. Today Systain is a comprehensive CR consultancy along the entire supply chain.

Testimonials
About our training initiative econchain (in cooperation with econsense):
„Creating a safe space to learn with and from each other, is what econchain is about. This training format conveys specific sustainability knowledge, which helps participants understand and tackle sustainability issues at the root. Suppliers and I are convinced of this peer-learning format.“
„estell [Systain’s analysis tool] provides us with the factual basis to manage and control our sustainability strategy.“
„Systain has enabled us to gain completely new insights into the environmental impacts and human rights risks of our supply chain.“
„Systain’s approach to measuring the environmental impacts of the supply chain using monetary information facilitates many analyses and is the key to comprehensive sustainability management. The approach is methodologically verified and is based on facts.“
Our values
Systain even goes one step further: The practical implementation of many consulting projects takes place in so-called developing and transition countries. These countries are struggling with enormous social and environmental challenges that are reflected in our daily work. We want to initiate positive change, beyond the scope of our consulting projects. Our shareholder has agreed to Systain being run as an ethical business. Systain remains a profit-oriented company, but will use profits for social and environmental initiatives. The projects chosen by us will be related to our consulting services and core competencies. Thanks to our long-term expertise in CSR and sustainability we can identify social and environmental problems and contribute to their solution. Moreover, we see ourselves as multipliers: we encourage our clients to support our chosen social and environmental initiatives beyond their CSR activities.
In addition to our ethical-business activities, Systain donates a whole day of work annually with its people to actively work in environmental or social projects.
